Essex County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Essex County is included in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Prior to the dissolution of the county government in 1999, it had two county seats: Salem, with jurisdiction over the Southern Essex District, and Lawrence, with jurisdiction over the Northern Essex District.

- Arkham
- Arkham Arkham is a city of somewhat Ivy League standing. It is located in the state of Massachusetts and may be situated a short distance from the towns of Dunwich or Innsmouth. Notable points of interest include the Arkham Sanitarium, the Arkham Historical Society and infamous Miskatonic University.
- Haverhill
- Haverhill is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. Haverhill is located 35 miles north of Boston on the New Hampshire border and about 17 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.Located on the Merrimack River, Haverhill began as a farming community of Puritans, largely from Newbury Plantation. In the 18th and 19th century, Haverhill developed woolen mills, tanneries, shipping and shipbuilding. The town was home to a significant shoe-making industry for many decades. By the end of 1913, one tenth of the shoes produced in the United States were made in Haverhill, and because of this the town was known during the time as the "Queen Slipper City".
- Miskatonic University
- Miskatonic University is a prestigious Ivy League school located in the city of Arkham in Essex County, Massachusetts. One of its most notable campuses is its medical school, which has a history of some controversy and notoriety, owing largely to events stemming from one of its more accomplished students, Doctor Herbert West. The medical school included classrooms, emergency rooms, operating rooms and an autopsy room, which was guarded by a man named A. Mace.
- Salem
- Salem is a city located in Essex County, Massachusetts. It is infamous as the location of the notorious Salem Witch Trials of the late 17th century. During the colonial era, there were more than one-hundred and fifty counts of alleged witchcraft that were investigated by the authorities and twenty-six women were convicted and sentenced as witches. The tale of the witches was made into a play by Arthur Miller in 1952 called The Crucible. The Crucible was later adapted into a film in 1996 starring Winona Ryder. The 2006 "male witch" film The Covenant, though not set in Salem, draws heavily from the story of the Salem Witch Trials.
