The electric power belt is a fictional item featured in comic books published by DC Comics. It is associated with the Black Lightning family of comic titles and first appeared in Black Lightning #1 in April, 1977.
The electric power belt was developed by a former mob hitman, now a tailor, named Peter Gambi. The belt provided its wearer to project destructive arcs of electricity and also generated an electrical field around the user's body.
Gambi gave the belt to high school principal Jefferson Pierce after Pierce decided to fight back against the crime and corruption perpetuated by a cartel known as The 100. Gambi also provided Pierce with a costume, mask, and wig to disguise his appearance. With this, he became the costumed urban hero known as Black Lightning. In time, Pierce managed to internalize his power, and no longer required the belt.
