"The Man Who Played God!" is the title to the first story featured in issue #34 of the Eerie ongoing anthology magazine series published by Warren Publishing. The story was written and illustrated by Tom Sutton. The first full story is "Parting is Such Sweet Horror", also written and drawn by Tom Sutton. The next story is "Eye of Cyclops!" by Buddy Saunders and Jaime Brocal. After that is "He Who Laughs Last... Is Grotesque!" by Al Hewetson and Mike Royer. This is followed by "Food for Thought" by Steve Skeates and Tony Williamsune. Next is "The Vow of the Wizard..." by Ernie Colon and Frank McLaughlin. After that is "The Sound of Wings" by F. Paul Wilson and Carlos Garzon. And last is "Lair of the Horned Man" by Alan Weiss. All stories were edited by James Warren with Nicola Cuti as contributing editor, and Billy Graham as managing editor. The cover art illustration was rendered by Boris Vallejo. This issue shipped in July, 1971 and carries a cover price of .60 cents per copy.
In England in the year 1900, scientist Andrew Crosse brags to members of the London Electrical Society about his work transforming stone into living creatures. While performing the experiment for the skeptical attendees, Crosse's samples evolve into a bizarre insect-like creature that begins to multiply at an alarming rate. The London Electrical Society is horrified and Crosse's reputation is ruined. Crosse would go on to attempt another such experiment three years later, only to accidentally set his laboratory on fire. Crosse dies in the inferno.
Eerie is an American comic book illustrated magazine series published by Warren Publishing. It was an anthology series dealing themes of horror, suspense and some science fiction. The series ran from March1966 to February1983, spanning a total of 138 issues.
There is some discrepency amongst character names in "Parting Is Such Sweet Horror". The main protagonist is addressed as Arnold Borvo on the first page of the story, but in the remainder of the story, he is identified as Martin Borvo.
The Cyclops that appears in "Eye of Cyclops!" is Polyphemus - the same creature featured in Homer's Odyssey, who fought Ulysses.
