Dune is an American feature film of the science fiction genre. It is based on the 1965 novel Dune by author Frank Herbert. The film adaptation was written and directed by David Lynch and produced by the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group. It was released theatrically in the United States on December 14th, 1984. The film stars Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides - the son of Duke Leto Atreides, who becomes a vital component in the ongoing rivalry between the factions of House Atreides and House Harkonnen - both of which vie for control over the planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, which is the source of a valuable spice known as melange. The movie also stars Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica, Virginia Madsen as Princess Irulan, Freddie Jones as Thufir Hawat, Brad Dourif as Piter De Vries, Richard Jordan as Duncan Idaho, Jürgen Prochnow as Duke Leto Atreides, Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck, and Sting as Feyd Rautha.
