Drones are living organisms that are part of a social system, which requires very distinctive and specific tasks. In many alien cultures, drones serve a singular purpose and are often bereft of free will. Drones often labor in service to a hierarchial figure such as a queen. In the Aliens franchise, the Xenomorph use drones to maintain the hive of the queen and to capture and or cocoon other beings, which will be used as living incubators for their young. In the Star Trek mythos, the entirety of the Borg Collective are drones in service to the will of the Borg Queen. They share a hive mind and their every action is committed towards the propagation of their quasi-species by assimilating other cultures.
In the 1979 film The Black Hole, Doctor Hans Reinhardt lobotomizes the crew of the U.S.S. Cygnus and turns them into mute, obedient workers.
