Plot[]

Crazy Jane is in a coma covered in wax following an assault by the Candlemaker, who was summoned by Dorothy Spinner. Cliff finds Jane's body, but the Chief is preoccupied, for it appears that Dorothy has gone missing. Despite Cliff's protestations, Niles Caulder insists that securing his daughter takes priority over Jane's current state.

Rita Farr attends a reading of "Our House" by the Cloverton Players, not realizing that the plot of the play centers around her own adventures as a member of the Doom Patrol. She meets Isabel Feathers, an actress, who plays the role of "The Blob Lady" from the play.

Meanwhile, Victor Stone and Ronni Evers spend post-coital time in bed at Ronni's apartment. Vic convinces her to let him do a biometric scan on her spine. He finds trace elements of cybernetic components and contacts his father, Silas Stone, at S.T.A.R. Labs.

Later, Rita leaves the theater and meets up with Larry Trainor, who is coming to terms with recent family troubles. Larry returns to Doom Manor just as a space ship is touching down in the front yard. The occupants of the vessel are the Pioneers of the Uncharted, who went into space in 1955 under the orders of the "benign genius" Niles Caulder. The members of the group include Captain Zip Callahan, his first mate Specs, and Russian cosmonaut Valentina Vostok. Zip and Specs act like effeminate goof balls out of a 1950s sitcom show.

Dorothy Spinner steals their space ship and places herself into self-imposed exile so that she can no longer be a threat to Earth. The Chief convinces Cliff to accompany him on a second vessel, which they take into outer space to pursue her. The ship is powered by a goat, who serves as the engine, with apples as the ship's fuel.

Back at Doom Manor, Larry discovers that Valentina has bonded to a radioactive energy being just like the Negative Man. She indicates that it only took her five years to completely master control over the being - a feat that Larry has yet to accomplish. Valentina also reveals that Zip and Specs died decades ago when a spaceborne spore infected their bodies. They are basically undead husks constantly repeating the same conversation over and again. Larry and Valentina decide that it is time to finally put these souls to rest and they bury them.

In The Underground, the alternate personalities of Crazy Jane prepare a funeral service for Baby Doll and Flaming Katy, who were both killed by the Candlemaker. Jane is unconvinced that her personalities can even be killed and tries to stop the procession. She is too late however, and the bodies of Baby Doll and Flaming Katy are cast into the pit. From their proverbial ashes however, a new personality emerges - Miranda.

In outer space, Caulder tracks Dorothy to an unidentified planet, and Cliff goes out to have a heart to heart with her. He convinces Dorothy to return to Earth with them. On their way back, Caulder jettisons Cliff out of the ship into outer space.

Quotes[]

....

  • Victor Stone: Yeah, I'm skipping over a pocket universe and a donkey. A world-ending cult, a world-saving cult, a secret government branch that housed a pack of flesh-eating butts...

....

  • Larry Trainor: First, I'm not in a time of need. I'm in a time of regret and self-loathing.

....

  • Valentina Vostok: If you ever need a new perspective on Earth, I highly recommend space.

....

  • Cliff Steele: So her imaginary friends took out two of Jane's imaginary selves. Do we need to have an imaginary intervention?
