- The title of this episode is taken from Murder on the Orient Express, which is a mystery novel featuring the character of Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. It was written by Agatha Christie and first published in 1934.
- The Twelfth Doctor intones the phrase "Are you my mummy?", which is a call back to the eerie children with gas masks from the season one episode, "The Empty Child". This episode featured Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor. "Mummy" in this context referred to a child's mother, not an actual mummy.
- The Doctor's exclamation of "We surrender!" is a call-back to the season two episode, "Rise of the Cybermen" when the Tenth Doctor made a similar exclamation after being surrounded by a horde of Cybermen.
