Disintegration is a process by which all of the molecular components of a body of material are broken down and separated, usually through an application of nuclear fission.
Disintegration appears in a great many science fiction storylines and may be demonstrated in the form of an experimental scientific process, an energy weapon, or super-power. In the Star Trek mythos, the process of teleporting from one location to another is carried out via a process of molecular disintegration at the origin point whereupon the body of matter (usually a person) is then re-integrated at a predetermined destination point.
In DC Comics, many super-powered individuals possess a form of disintegration as an aspect of their natural abilities. The super-villain known as Plasmus possesses this ability.
