The Dirty Pair (ダーティペア, Dāti Pea) is a multimedia franchise that originated with a series of light illustrated novels by Japanese author Haruka Takachiho. Artwork on the stories was provided by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. The original stories were presented in serialized format in issues of SF Magazine, which were then collected into a series of books beginning with Great Adventures of the Dirty Pair in 1979. The franchise then spread out into various original video animation (OVA) formats beginning with a TV series in 1985, an original movie titled Dirty Pair: Mystery of Norlandia in 1987, another OVA series in 1987, followed by the Original Dirty Pair: Project Eden animated film in 1987, as well as Original Dirty Pair: Flight 005 Conspiracy in 1990. Additionally, the franchise has been adapted into comic book format, beginning with a four-issue series in 1988 by Eclipse Comics, a two follow-up titles, a five-issue series by Viz Media in 1994, which was then followed by numerous limited series and one-shot projects published by Dark Horse Comics. In 1995, another OVA series called Dirty Pair Flash was produced.

The first Dirty Pair animated television series was produced by Shochiku Eiga, Bandai Entertainment, Inc. and Sunrise. They aired from 1985 to 1987 on the Nippon Television Network in Japan, spanning a single season consisting of twenty-six episodes. The main characters, Kei and Yuri, were voiced by Kyôko Tongû and Saeko Shimazu respectively. These episodes were released on DVD by Right Stuf International and features the original Japanese audio with English subtitles. The show was re-released on DVD by Yamato Video, with the character's names being changed to Kate and Julie. This was followed by an OVA in 1987, which consisted of ten half-hour episodes.
