Biography[]

Like many throughout the world, Dennis Brent lost his eyesight on the night a mysterious comet streaked across the Earth, rendering the majority of the world's population permanently blind. Dennis lived in a farmhouse in Sussex, England with his wife Mary (also blind) and his daughter Alice. Shortly before Alice's birth, the Brents invited a sighted woman named Jo Payton to come and live with them. Jo aided the Brents in the upkeep of the farm and remained there for six years. Jo's lover, Bill Masen, came to the house and moved in with Dennis as well. [1]

Six years after the night of the comet, a military squad led by Commander Torrence, arrived at the farmhouse and announced that they would be commandeering the farm and turning it into a shelter for the blind. He all but said that in the new world dynamic, a blind man such as Dennis would have no legal claim to real estate any longer and they would take his property by force if they had to.

That evening, Bill managed to sneak Dennis and the others out of the farmhouse and they all fled Sussex for the Isle of Wight where they went to live with a friend named Jack Coker. [2]
