The Initiative, formerly known as the Demon Research Initiative, is a fictional secret military group featured in the WB Network television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They first appeared in the premiere episode of season four of the series, "The Freshman", and served as the central antagonists, or "Big Bad", of the season.
