The Democratic Republic of the Congo, sometimes referred to simply as the Congo, is a landlocked nation located in central Africa. From 1965 to 1997, it included the nation state known as the Republic of Zaire.

In the Marvel Universe, Zaire was the home of the O'Hara family, which consisted of diamond miner Gerald O'Hara, his wife Patricia and young daughter, Shanna O'Hara - the only member of the family actually born in the Congo. When his daughter was only six-years-old, Gerald went off to hunt down a rogue leopard that had been threatening the surrounding area. Unwittingly however, he accidentally shot his own wife, killing her. Naturally, the shock of this affected Shanna deeply and she grew up nursing a lifelong hatred of firearms. She eventually became the jungle adventurer known as Shanna, the She-Devil. She took in two jungle cats as pets, Biri and Ina. Although her first few adventures took place in Africa, she eventually relocated to the Savage Land.
