Delphine LaLaurie was an actual American serial killer and sadist. She was born Marie Delphine Macarty in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 19th, 1787. She gained notoriety in the 1830s when it was discovered that she was keeping slaves bound in an attic, where they were being brutalized, tortured, and ultimately killed. LaLaurie fled the country and went into exile in France, along with her husband. She died in Paris on December 7th, 1849 at the age of 62.
The FX Network television series American Horror Story presented a fictionalized version of Madame LaLaurie, who became a secondary antagonist in the season three storyline, "Coven". She was played by actress Kathy Bates, and was one of the main cast members from the season. The American Horror Story version of LaLaurie however, lived on beyond her historical death, and re-emerged in the modern era where she was eventually. beheaded. She survived even this however for a brief period, but ultimately found her soul consigned to Hell.
