"Everything Is Broken" is the twelfth episode of season one of the science fiction television series Defiance and the thirteenth episode of the series overall (if one counts the two-part series pilot as two episodes). It was directed by Michael Nankin and written by Kevin Murphy. It first aired on Syfy on Monday, July 8th, 2013 at 9:00 pm.
In this episode, the election results are in, and Defiance welcomes Datak Tarr as its new mayor. With Datak in charge, the Earth Republic has an easy time of claiming jurisdiction over the town, in particular - the McCawley Mines, the secrets of which are sorely coveted. Rynn Grisu finds the ailing Irisa and brings her back to an Irathient settlement. Joshua Nolan and Tommy LaSalle go looking for her, but run afoul of the E-Rep army as well as the mercenary organization known as Echelon.

- Joshua Nolan: Yeah, it's a lifelong ambition of mine.
....
- Irisa: While he's distracted, climb the ridge and get clear.
- Joshua Nolan: One rule: We live or die together.
- Irisa: You're an idiot.
- Joshua Nolan: I'm the idiot.
....
- Datak Tarr: Datak: I know you betrayed me. I should open your guts right here in front of these good people. But a vote is a vote.
....
- Jonah Keller: If you're playing us, I will scalp that golf ball head of yours and wear it for a hat.
- Doc Yewll: What's a golf ball?
....
- Jonah Keller: Getting soft in your old age, Doc? Word is you used to dissect humans while they were alive and kicking.
- Doc Yewll: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was a monster. I regret my past and I'm trying to do better. You should be taking notes.
....
- Jonah Keller: Doctor, allow me to properly introduce myself. I'm special consultant Jonah Keller. Informally known as "Black Jonah." Perhaps you've heard of me. I'm a professional interrogator, and I enjoy my work to an arguably indecent degree.
