Synopsis[]
Datak Tarr and his men capture Elah Bandik, whom they seek for the crime of cowardice after he fled from the Volge attack during the Battle of the Bissel Pass. They bring him back to The Hollows where they punish him by quartering in keeping with Castithan tradition. Joshua Nolan attempts to stop the religious observance, but Mayor Rosewater forces him to back down. Irisa later goes to the site and frees Elah.
Meanwhile, Solomon Birch sneaks into Doc Yewll's office after hours and revives Ben Darris. Despite Ben's failure to guide the Volge attack, Birch still has another job for him. He has him go to the McCawley Mines with 20 kilograms of Gulanite and orders him to detonate it. Joshua Nolan brings Rafe McCawley into the mines to track him down, but Nolan struggles with restraining Rafe from killing the man who murdered his son, Luke.
