Daybreakers is an American/Australian co-produced independent feature film of the horror and science fiction genres. It was written and directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, collectively known as The Spierig Brothers. It was presented by Lionsgate Films and Film Finance Corporation Australia and produced by Paradise in association with the Pacific Film and Television Commission and in association with Furst Films. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11th, 2009. In the United States, it premiered in New York City, New York on January 7th, 2010. It opened to wider release in the U.S. on January 8th, 2010. The film stars Ethan Hawke as Edward Dalton, with Willem Dafoe as Lionel "Elvis" Cormac, and Sam Neill as Charles Bromley. It is the year 2019. A virulent plague has swept across the globe, turning nearly every human citizen into vampires. Now facing a dwindling supply of much-needed life-giving blood, the fractured undead race must fight for their very survival. Meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vampires on a way to save humankind.
