David Glatzel is a survivor of reported demonic possession. He was born in 1970 and grew up in Brookfield, Connecticut. At the age of 11, he demonstrated behavior symptomatic of the effects of demonic possession. An exorcism was conducted on David Glatzel by a local priest, which was assisted by paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren. David Glatzel's story was the basis for the 2021 feature film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

The Conjuring[]

David Glatzel was born the third child to Carl Glatzel, Sr. and Judith Glatzel in 1973. He had two older brothers named Alan and Carl, Jr., and an older sister named Deborah. Sometime around the Spring or early Summer of 1981, the Glatzels moved into their new home at 204 Oak Grove Road in Brookfield, Connecticut.

On the day that the family moved into their new home, David Glatzel took a box of toys to an upstairs master bedroom that has a water bed. David was excited by this discovery and began jumping up and down on the bed. A gruesome face appeared beneath the canvas, which startled David. Then a demonic hand poked out from the mattress and grabbed him by the arm. David screamed and managed to pull himself free. Mother Judy ran into the room to console him, but there is was evidence of anything wrong with the bed.

Though David was unaware of this at the time, he had actually become the victim of a curse orchestrated by Satanic cultist Isla Kastner, who planted a witch's totem beneath the house. This was the first of a three-part ritual that began with the summoning of a demon that took possession of David.

When David began exhibiting signs of demonic possession, the Glatzels consulted with demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren to help them. On July 18th, 1981, Ed and Lorraine came to the house and worked with David's parents, older sister Debbie and Debbie's boyfriend Arne Johnson to keep him contained. Once David was temporarily calmed down, he was sent off to bed. Having received approval for an exorcism, the Warrens awaited the arrival of Father Gordon. The priest was dropped off by taxicab and entered the house where he began preparing the rites of exorcism.

David was suddenly awakened by a repeated tremendous banging noise. He ran into the bathroom and hides in the bathtub. Looking up, he noted that the shower curtain rings are actually the curled fingers of some demonic creature. David retreated and curled up in the corner of the room. When his parents heard him shouting, they raced upstairs. As David's father opened the door, the boy raced towards him with a knife and stabbed him in the right knee. Ed Warren picked David up and carried him downstairs. As David flailed in his arms, claw marks began appearing on the walls. Father Gordon recommended getting the boy to the church immediately for the exorcism, but Ed Warren refused, citing that the priest needed to conduct the exorcism now.

David Glatzel's body contorted and convulsed and he used telekinesis to make items fly all about the kitchen. A plate struck Father Gordon, disrupting the exorcism. In the middle of the chaos, Lorraine began having a psychic flash of some sort of mystical item. David leaped upward and attacked Ed Warren, placing his fingers upon his chest, growling, "I will stop your heart, old man". Arne Johnson pulled David away and screamed at the invading entity, "Leave him alone and take me!" The presence agreed and the demon abandoned David's body and enters Arne where it lied dormant. Free of the curse, David no longer demonstrated any symptoms of demonic possession.
