Synopsis[]
A disfigured Quentin Collins enters the home of his friend Evan Hanley demanding to know the location of the Hand of Count Petofi. Evan denies having it, but Quentin doesn't believe him. He begins searching for it on his own, but when Evan tries to stop him, Quentin hits him across the head with an object, knocking him out. Quentin finds the box containing the hand in a drawer in Evan's desk. As he turns to leave however, another stranger enters the room. This is Aristede, and he too covets the hand. Aristede threatens Quentin with a curved dagger which he calls the Dancing Lady. Quentin tries to wrest the weapon away from him, but Aristede overcomes him and points the tip of the Dancing Lady right at Quentin's throat. Quentin has no choice but to surrender the hand.
After Aristede leaves, Quentin returns to the Old House and consults with Magda Rakosi. He tells her that he needs someone with power to help him out of his current predicament. Using black magic, Quentin calls upon the aid of the witch Angelique Du Val.
Angelique materializes in the home of Evan Hanley, just as Evan is awakening on the floor. Angelique tells Evan her intentions to insinuate herself into the lives of the Collins family once again. She leaves and goes to the Old House to speak with Quentin. After she leaves, Evan telephones Edward Collins to inform him of her presence.
Angelique arrives at the Old House and is greeted by Magda and Quentin. Angelique dismisses Magda so that she can have a private conversation with him. Quentin explains the events of the evening and how the hand was stolen from him by a man named Aristede. Angelique agrees to help him, but as with all things, her service comes with a price - a price to be named later. Quentin agrees.
Angelique finds Aristede lighting a cigar on the docks of Collinsport. Posing as a puppeteer, she flirts with Aristede, who returns her seeming affection. She tells him that she is gifted at mimicry and can perfectly imitate his voice. She has Aristede turn around and manipulates him into giving her his scented handkerchief. She offers forth a poor imitation of Aristede's voice, and when he turns to face her, she has his handkerchief wrapped around the throat of a toy doll. She commands him to tell her where the Hand of Count Petofi is, but when he refuses, she tightens the handkerchief and Aristede begins choking.
