Biography[]
Daniel Alden was a member of the Federation Starfleet holding the rank of Lieutenant. He served as the Communications Officer aboard the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk and also served as relief helmsman. In 2265, the Enterprise encountered a magnetic anomaly out beyond the edge of the galaxy. The electromagnetic radiation played havoc with the ship's sensors and Alden was required to man both the communications and sensor stations. When Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell was injured during the encounter, Lieutenant Alden took his place at the helm. [1]
Notes & Trivia[]
- The character of Daniel Alden was created by James Goldstone and Samuel A. Peeples.
- If "Where No Man Has Gone Before" had been aired in the correct sequence, Lieutenant Alden would have been the first African American character featured on Star Trek. As it turns out, that honor goes to Nyota Uhura, who appeared in "The Man Trap", the first episode of the series to actually be broadcast.
- In "Where No Man Has Gone Before", he is addressed only as Alden. His first name was revealed in the Star Trek: My Brother's Keeper: Constitution novel by Michael Jan Friedman.
