A dancer is one who engages in the performing art of dance. This involves rhythmic body movements set to music. There are many different styles of dancing including modern dance, ballet, break-dancing, dubstep, krunk, etc. Yes, even strippers dance, though this has more to do with some schmuck shoving some dollars into a dancer's g-string rather than an appreciation for the art-form.
Dancers hail from all walks of life. They might be aspiring competitive dancers who are "in it to win it" (and lets all collectively beat the crap out of the genius who first gave us THAT phrase, shall we?), or they might be hardened Pittsburgh steel workers who discover the majesty of dancing on stage and having a bucket of water pour down upon them. It takes all kinds.
Dancers may perform in dance halls, exotic clubs, convention centers and even some bars and clubs. On the TV series True Blood, there is a Fae night club called Hot Wings where many of the staff members are also dancers.
In the 2010 superhero fantasy film Iron Man 2, there were a group of dancers called the Ironettes who performed at the Stark Expo. They were the lead-in to Tony Stark making a showy entrance as he flew down to the stage in full armor. The dancers' costumes were patterned after the Iron Man armor.
In Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, an alien woman named Oola as well as another woman named Yarna D'al' Gargan was a dancer for Jabba the Hutt and performed for him as slaves in his palace on Tatooine. Oola did not care for the way Jabba treated her, and paid for her resistance with her life.
