Cypress Hills Cemetery was the first nonsectarian cemetery corporation organized in the Brooklyn/Queens area of New York City. It is located at 833 Jamaica Avenue in Brooklyn. Established in 1848 east of the Ridgewood Reservoir, a section of the cemetery was designated as the Cypress Hills National Cemetery in 1862 as a military burial ground for soldiers of the American Civil War, which in 1941 received the bodies of 235 Confederate prisoners who died on Hart Island.
In fiction[]
The Cypress Hills Cemetery is one of the provincial locations featured in the 1990-1998 comic book series Ghost Rider, making it's first appearance in Ghost Rider, Volume 3 #1. In that issue, the cemetery became the sight of a massive battle between the forces of a psychic criminal named Deathwatch and the underworld cronies of Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of crime. Caught in the crossfire of this combustible situation was a low-key gang of juvenile delinquents who called themselves the Cypress Pool Jokers as well as siblings Danny and Barbara Ketch. During the firefight, Barbara was gravely injured by a crossbow bolt and Danny had to take her away from the scene. It was on this night that Ketch transformed into the nightmarish Spirit of Vengeance, the Ghost Rider for the very first time.
The Cypress Hills Cemetery later became the de facto headquarters for a conglomeration of supernatural adventurers referred to as the Midnight Sons.
