Curse of Chucky is an American horror film of the slasher and killer doll genres. It is the sixth installment in the Child's Play film series and the first movie in the series to be released direct-to-video. It follows the 2004 movie Seed of Chucky. The movie was written and directed by franchise creator Don Mancini and premiered on Video-on-Demand on September 24th, 2013. Unlike the two previous films, Curse of Chucky returns to the franchise towards its more serious horror roots, though still contains some elements of dark comedy. The film stars Summer Howell as Alice, Chantal Quesnelle as Sarah, Fiona Dourif as Nica, Danielle Bisutti as Barb, A Martinez as Father Frank, Maitland McConnell as Jill and Brennan Elliott as Ian. Voice actor Brad Dourif reprises the role of Charles Lee Ray, aka "Chucky" for the sixth time.
Synopsis[]
Special Delivery[]
A delivery driver for US EX arrives at the Pierce residence at 5867 Golden Oak Road in Highgate, Rhode Island. The woman who answers the door is Nica Pierce, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair. The driver recognizes Nica from when they went to City College, but Nica tells him that she dropped out. He flirts with her a bit and gives her a large rectangular package addressed to her mother, Sarah. As the man leaves, Nica gives the box to her mother and says that she thought the man was hitting on her. Sarah indelicately replies that "he was just being nice".
Sarah opens the box to reveal a Good Guys doll. She doesn't know who sent it and does not have any real interest in it. She throws it in the garbage. That evening, Nica is downstairs and hears an ear-piercing scream. She goes out into the foyer to find her mother dead on the floor with scissors sticking up out of her chest.
It's All About Family[]
The following morning, Nica's sister Barbara comes over with a priest named Father Frank. Sarah's death is being ruled as a suicide. Father Frank begins to comment about the church's position, but Nica waves him off, telling him that her mother and she separated from the church quite some time ago. Nica's husband Ian and their young daughter Alice arrive moments later along with their attractive nanny Jill. Barbara shows Nica a brochure for an assisted living facility. Nica is offended, but this leads into Barbara's recommendation that they should sell the house. She tries selling Nica on the idea that her share of the profits would have set for life. She then reveals that Ian and she are struggling financially and that Ian works at a Starbucks and she fears that they might have to start sending Alice to public school.
While Barb and Nica argue, Ian and Jill bring Alice upstairs to show her the room she will be staying in. Alice has to go to the bathroom and insists on locking the door. While urinating, she notices the shower curtain moving. After she completes her business, she goes to the curtain and pulls it back to reveal Chucky. She lets out a scream. The adults hear it from downstairs, but when Alice appears, she is holding the Good Guys doll with a big smile on her face. She said she screamed because she was startled. Nica is perplexed, as she knows her mother had thrown the thing away but doesn't give it any additional thought. She allows Alice to play with it, and the child quickly becomes obsessed with the doll.
Nica offers to make dinner for everyone. Jill comments about Nica's disability, and questions whether she should be attempting such a feat for six people. Nica is greatly offended, but plays if off in front of Alice, saying that she'll be fine so long as she has an assistant. Alice agrees to help Nica in the kitchen to prepare food. As they are sorting through ingredients, Nica tells Alice that the secret to a good chili is oregano. She begins cutting up tomatoes by violently chopping them in half with a butcher knife. When the chili is done cooking, Nica plates the meal and goes into the other room with Alice to set up the dining room. While they are away, Chucky emerges in the kitchen and pours rat poison into one of the dishes.
Fatal Meal[]
Six bowels of chili are set out for six seats at a large round table. Alice has Chucky on her lap while they eat. The meal is an uncomfortable one given recent events. Ian feigns discomfort while eating, but then confesses to how much he is enjoying Nica's chilly. He also takes some time to flirt with Jill, which irritates Barbara. Alice in turn begins making a weird face as she eats. She suggests maybe they used too much oregano. Her mother commands her to eat it, adding "It's not that bad", which is just one more jab that Nica must silently suffer through. Near the end of the meal, Father Frank begins sweating profusely. He stands up and excuses himself, nervously stating that he needs to leave for a prior appointment.
While driving home, the rat poison in the food continues to have an adverse effect on him. Father Frank loses control of the vehicle and slams into another car, killing two motorists. Highgate police officer Stanton and several first responders arrive on the scene. One officer tells Stanton that it is Father Frank, and suggests that he might be drinking again. Stanton refuses to believe this, noting that not only has Father Frank not had any alcohol in years, but that he was also his AA sponsor.
As they approach the vehicle, they note that Father Frank is pinned down by several twisted pieces of metal, with just his head sticking up behind the wreckage. Emergency workers pull the pieces of metal off him, only to find that they were the only things holding his head in place. His completely severed head rolls off and falls into the back seat of the vehicle. Father Frank's severed hand is also in the back seat.
Electrifying Love Affair[]
As the evening wears on, Nica and Barb watch old family home movies from when Sarah was pregnant with Nica. Barb mentions how their father had died in a drowning accident a couple of weeks before Nica was born. Nica notices a strange man with long brown hair in the video and asks about him. Barb doesn't know who he is.
The hour grows late, and a storm begins raging outside. It is time for Alice to go to bed. She cannot find Chucky however and refuses to go to sleep without him. Frustrated, Jill begins searching about the house looking for Chucky. Ian falls asleep on the couch downstairs. Nica rolls into the room and finds Chucky on the couch next to him. She takes the doll and goes into the elevator to bring it up to Alice's room. While the elevator is halfway to the landing, the power suddenly cuts out. When it comes back on a moment later, Chucky's head spins to face her, and the doll emits one of its preprogrammed lines. Nica is startled and gives the doll to Barbara, who takes it to Alice.
Barbara and Jill meet in Jill's room and the two begin making out in the dark. Although Ian has been openly flirtatious with Jill, it is actually Barbara that has been carrying on an affair. After they kiss, Barbara returns to the room she is sharing with her husband, where Ian is asleep with noise cancelling headphones. Barbara takes out her laptop and begins silently video chatting with Jill. Barb notices Chucky scurrying about in the background and tries to draw Jill's attention to it, suspecting that it is actually Alice playing with the doll. Jill thinks Barbara is just being playful and doesn't turn her head until it is too late. Chucky appears right next to her with a bucket of water sitting on the floor (the bucket is there to catch drips from a leaking ceiling). He kicksthe bucket over and the water washes over the floor outlet that Jill's laptop is plugged into. The water sweeps over Jill's bare feet, and when it makes contact with the outlet, it sends an electrical charge through her body, killing her. The laptop connection cuts out to due to the shock, so Barbara does not witness her lover being electrocuted.
Barbara then awakens Ian to tell him that she is going to go check on Alice. Ian reveals his suspicion that Barb is cheating on him with Jill, stating on "Are you checking on her, or Jill?" Barb tries to act innocent until Ian reveals that he has hidden a nanny cam inside the Chucky doll. He threatens to take Alice away from her, and Barb storms out of the room.
Doll Investigation[]
Meanwhile, Nica is freaked out over the Good Guys doll behavior. She inspects the packaging to see who sent it, but there is no return address. She tries calling courier service, but the storm is causing interference, and the only words she can make out are "evidence depository". Nica begins researching strange stories relating to Good Guys dolls on the internet and finds several websites chronicling unsolved murders from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Niagara Falls, going back more than twenty years.
Nica calls out for Barb, who emerges on the staircase landing. They begin arguing about Chucky, and Barb erroneously thinks that Nica knew that Ian put a nanny cam inside of it. Nica tries to tell her how the doll has been linked to several murders, but Barb isn't hearing it, and storms off.
Barbara finds Chucky and begins feeling about for the nanny cam. Instead, what she finds is a large knife tucked into overalls. She also notices a loose piece of rubber on the doll's face and begins picking at it. She continues to tug away at the latex overlay until the stitched up scarred ruins of Chucky's face are revealed. Chucky takes up the knife, makes a crack about Barbara's eyes being too far apart, then plunges the knife into her left eye, plucking it out. He then tosses the eyeball down the staircase. Barbara stumbles about in the midst of her death-throes, then falls down the stairs.
Nica vs. Chucky[]
Nica witnesses all of this and now knows that the doll is alive and trying to kill her. She manages to get to Ian's room and awakens him, shouting that Barbara and Jill are dead. Frantic, Ian asks her where Alice is, but Nica does not know. They go downstairs and Nica goes into the garage. Chucky is inside and locks the garage door. He starts up the car, letting the carbon monoxide fill the room. Nica smashes the driver side window and tries to turn the car off, but Chucky grabs the keys and swallows them. Ian enters the garage, but Chucky is now hiding. He now thinks that Nica is the one responsible for the deaths. Nica begins having a heart attack, but Ian does nothing to help her, and lets her pass out.
When Nica comes to, she is strapped down to her wheelchair with tape across her mouth. Ian is convinced that she murdered Barb and Jill and demands to know where Alice is. He begins looking at the live-feed on the nanny cam, but does not react in time as Chucky enters the room. Brandishing an axe, Chucky attacks Ian, chopping off his lower jaw, which kills him. Chucky then takes the axe and buries it in Nica's shin. Being a paraplegic, Nica does not feel any pain in her legs, but she still has to dress the wound before she bleeds to death. Nica pulls the axe out of her leg and smacks Chucky across the head with it, decapitating him. As she returns to addressing her injury, Chucky's body sits up and re-attaches his head. He pushes Nica and her wheelchair off a balcony landing and she tumbles to the floor below.
Chucky then offers up some measure of explanation behind his actions. When he was the human Charles Lee Ray, he was a neighbor of Nica's parents. He became fixated on Sarah Pierce, so she made certain to isolate her by doing away with Nica's father. His fixation grew to obsession, so he kidnapped her. When she rejected him, he stabbed her in the stomach, with the intent of killing her unborn baby. It was only a few moments later that the police converged on his position, forcing him to flee. This led to the shoot-out that fatally wounded his physical body, forcing him to transfer his spirit into a Good Guys doll. Nica now realizes that Chucky is the reason that she is a paraplegic.
Nina crawls across the floor to get to the elevator, but Chucky is right on top of her. She slams the barred door shut, but Chucky swipes at her fingers with the knife. Nica then grabs the blade portion of the knife in her hand and wrests it free from Chucky's grasp. She then stabs Chucky in the back repeatedly, sending cotton fluff into the air.
Officer Stanton of the Highgate Police and several other officers arrive at the house. They are there because they know that this is the last place the late Father Frank visited before he died. As they enter the house, the find Nica covered in blood holding a knife, with Barbara's bloody body behind her. Chucky remains inert. Nica is blamed for the murders and arrested.
The Aftermath[]
Nica goes to court and is declared mentally incompetent and will be remanded to the care of a psychiatric facility. As she is wheeled past the table holding all of the evidence from the case, she looks upon the Chucky doll and begins cackling, "I'm still alive! I'm still alive!" Officer Stanton meanwhile, uses his resources to take possession of Chucky for himself. He gets into his car and calls someone on his cell phone about the money he was promised for the doll. He turns his head and notices that the doll within the evidence bag is beginning to exhale. Suddenly, Tiffany Valentine pops up in the back seat of the vehicle, and slices Officer Stanton's throat open with a nail file. She then takes possession of Chucky, who is her lover. Tiffany then boxes Chucky up and goes to a US EX office where she ships him off.
Little Alice has survived the ordeal at the Pierce residence because she had hidden herself in the closet. With both of her parents dead, she now lives with her grandmother. Alice looks about the house for her, but cannot find her. She does however find Chucky sitting on a table. Chucky leans in close and tells her they are going to play a new game - "Hide the Soul". Chucky recites the incantation of Damballa and transfers his soul into Alice's body. In another room, Alice's grandmother sits upward, struggling to remove a plastic bag from her head, which suffocates her.
Six months later, Andy Barclay is at his residence. A large package arrives in the post and he placed it onto a table. Turning his back, he then fields a telephone call from his mother who wishes him a happy birthday, and Andy tells her "no gifts". He asks about Mike then tells her that he will see her tomorrow. As he is concluding his telephone call, a knife pops up from inside the box and begins to slice it open. Andy is no fool however, and he knows exactly what this is. Chucky's face emerges only to be staring into the business end of a shotgun that Andy is holding. A gunshot resounds inside the room.

- Curse of Chucky premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada on August 2nd, 2013.
- Curse of Chucky was screened at the Film4 FrightFest in the United Kingdom on August 22nd, 2013.
- Curse of Chucky was released on DVD in Region 1 format and on Blu-ray and Digital HD on October 8th, 2013 by Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
- Actress Summer H. Howell is credited as Summer Howell in this film.
- Alex Vincent reprises the role of Andy Barclay after a 23-year absence from the series following Child's Play 2, though this is the first appearance of Andy Barclay since Child's Play 3.
- When Nica Pierce does an internet search for doll-related murders, the search screen yields descriptions of several related unsolved murders, which are indirect references to events from the previous films. The Los Angeles murders relate to Seed of Chucky, the Niagara Falls murders relates to Bride of Chucky, the Chicago murders relate to Child's Play and Child's Play 2 and the Kent Military School murders relate to Child's Play 3.
- In the film, a newspaper scan dated Tuesday, September 27th, 1988 chronicles the events of the first Child's Play. The story from the article also takes place on a Tuesday. Since the events of Child's Play could not take place on the same day in which the newspaper article was published, then this would mean that the final act of the film takes place the previous Tuesday, which would be September 20th, 1988. This contradicts information supplied in the original film, which takes place on Andy Barclay's birthday, which is November 9th.
- The single shot we see of Alice's grandmother is reminiscent of that of Clare Harrison from the 1974 holiday horror Black Christmas, who is also killed by being suffocated with a plastic bag.
- Given Nica Pierce's methods when it comes to food preparation, it is no wonder that her sister was reluctant to let her cook for six people. While cutting up vegetables, Nica does not slice tomatoes the way a normal person would. Rather, she violently chops them in half with a butcher knife. Weird chick.
- It is implied that Father Frank is a recovering alcoholic. When one police officer theorizes that he may have been drinking and driving, Officer Stanton corrects him, noting that he has not had a drop in years. Further, Father Frank was Officer Stanton's AA sponsor.
- Presumably, the nanny cam that had been hidden inside of Chucky's overalls was destroyed. Otherwise, it would have been discovered and used as evidence to exonerate Nica during her trial.
Bloopers[]
- Despite the title of this film, there are no actual curses to be found.
- A close up of the Us-X shipping label shows Sarah Pierce's name spelled as Sarah Pirce.
- The firefighter that tries to assist extricating Father Frank from the car wreckage bears a helmet that says, "West St. Paul Fire Department". While the West St. Paul Fire Department is an actual organization, they are based out of Manitoba, Canada and are most definitely not active in Rhode Island. The movie was filmed in Winnipeg, which is the capital city of Manitoba province.
- The placement of the stitches on Chucky's face is not consistent with how he is shown in previous films.
- When Chucky kills Barb, a close-up of her face shows she has green eyes. When Chucky sends one of the eyeballs down the steps, it is blue.
- Although Fiona Dourif does a capital job at keeping her legs immobile, there is one scene where she bends her knees while trying to escape from Chucky inside the elevator.
- The revving engine of a Ford Taurus sounds like a V8 engine even though that model only has a V6. Further, Chucky would not be able to keep revving the engine due to this stature. His feet would not reach the gas pedal.
- The flashback scene of Charles Lee Ray tormenting pregnant Sarah Pierce takes place immediately preceding the events of Child's Play, which takes place in early November. However, the home movies show a summer family barbeque and Sarah is showing just as pregnant then as she does in the early winter.
