A comedian is someone who works in the entertainment industry with a specialty in comedy. This may take the form of a stand-up comedian, often referred to as "comics", or they may be a comedic actor. A possible origin for the DC Comics character, the Joker, posits that he was once a failed stand-up comedian prior to becoming the Joker. On the TV series Gotham, a scrawny stand-up comic auditions at Fish Mooney's nightclub. The character of Edward Blake from the DC maxi-series The Watchmen went by the code name of The Comedian, but the name was intended as a form of irony and had little to do with Blake's actual actions or demeanor. On Star Trek: The Next Generation, the character of Data attempted to emulate the human experience by learning comedy from a Hologram version of 20th century comic Joe Piscopo. In the IT novel by Stephen King, the character of Richie Tozier grew up to become a stand-up comic.
