A clan is a group of people united by actual or perceived kinship and descent. Even if lineage details are unknown, clan members may be organized around a founding member or apical ancestor. The kinship-based bonds may be symbolical, whereby the clan shares a "stipulated" common ancestor that is a symbol of the clan's unity. When this "ancestor" is non-human, it is referred to as a totem, which is frequently an animal. Clans can be most easily described as tribes or sub-groups of tribes.

The Shavadai, or Sha'vadi, is a human tribe found on the planet Simarka. It is believed that they are descended from the inhabitants of Mongul-ruled China and were brought to Simarka by the Goa'uld known as Raiden. The chieftain of the clan was a man named Moughal who had a son named Abu. Abu was in love with a young woman named Nya, who was the daughter of a rival chieftain named Turghan. One of the tenets of Shavadai culture was that the women members of the tribe were always submissive to the males. They were required to be obedient, keep their faces covered at all times, and could not speak unless spoken to first. [1]
