Child's Play and the "Chucky" character were created by producer and screenwriter Don Mancini and began as a slasher film in 1988, and has expanded into numerous sequels, a spin-off television series, and a reboot film.

A homeless man is seen drunkenly singing "My Favorite Things", which was made popular in the 1965 musical The Sound of Music. Chucky paraphrases a song lyric with "...Murder and mayhem and lots of killings. These are a few of my favorite things..."
Chucky invokes the "Just Say No" slogan, which was part of an anti-drug campaign spearheaded by former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
Chucky makes reference to Nurse Ratchett, who was an antagonist featured in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Coincidentally, actor Brad Dourif, who provides the voice of Chucky in the Child's Play films, also played a mental patient named Billy Bibbit in the film.
