Maurice Herbert Evans was a British film and television actor born in Dorchester, Dorset, England on June 3rd, 1901. In science fiction media, he is best known for playing the role of Doctor Zaius in the first two installments of the Planet of the Apes film series.

• The role of Doctor Zaius was originally offered to actor Edward G. Robinson. Robinson shot a provincial screen test, but had difficulty working with the makeup and prosthetics, so the part ultimately went to Evans. Robinson would go on to co-star with Planet of the Apes actor Charlton Heston in the 1973 dystopic film Soylent Green.

• Several actors from the Planet of the Apes film series have also appeared on episodes of the original live-action Batman TV series including Maurice Evans, Roddy McDowall, Linda Harrison and Victor Buono.
