Joseph's first professional television work was playing a character named Rounder in the 1988 TV Western Stranger on My Land. His first work in the sci-fi genre came in 1991 when he played a boy named Kyle in the "Permanent Wave" episode of Quantum Leap. From 1996 to 2001, Joseph had his first major starring role as a member of the ensemble cast on the NBC comedy series 3rd Rock from the Sun. Joseph played the role of long-haired pre-teen alien Tommy Solomon. Like all of the main cast members from the series, he appeared in all 138 episodes of the program. In 2001, Levitt played Zach in the "Something About Harry" episode of The Outer Limits relaunch series. In 2002 Joseph provided the voice for Jim Hawkins in the Disney animated feature Treasure Planet. In 2010 Levitt played Arthur in the Christopher Nolan film Inception.
