John Hollis was a British film and television actor who was born in the UK on November 12th, 1927.
Biography[]
Hollis' first professional acting job was in the sci-fi genre when he played the role of Kaufman, the evil agent of the Intel Trading Consortium from the 1961 television series A for Andromeda. He appeared in four of the seven episodes of the series, but had a more prominent role when he reprised the character for the 1962 sequel, The Andromeda Breakthrough. In this series, Hollis appeared in all six episodes. In 1972, Hollis forged himself a place in Doctor Who history when he played the role of Professor Sondergaard in "The Mutants" storyline from the original Doctor Who series. Three years later, he played a character named "Two Tone" in the "One Law" story-arc from The Tomorrow People.
Modern audiences best remember John in the role of Lobot, the silent cyborg who assisted Lando Calrissian in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. In the film, Hollis' character was credited only as "Lando's aide". That same year, Hollis also played the role of Klytus observer #2 in the campy 1980 adaptation of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon.
Outside of the sci-fi genre, John Hollis distinguished himself as the villainous Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. He also played a Kryptonian elder in the 1978 super-hero film Superman as well its sequel, Superman II. Hollis returned to the Superman franchise in 1987 when he played a Russian general in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
Hollis' last role in a sci-fi program was in the fourth episode of the British series The Day of the Triffids. John Hollis passed away in London, England on October 18th, 2005 at the age of 77.
