Jewel Staite is a Canadian actress born in White Rock, British Columbia on June 2nd, 1982. As a child, she entered into the world of modeling, but was recommended to look towards acting while only six-years-old. Her first role in a science fiction feature was playing a girl named Amy Jacobs in the "Oubliette" episode of The X-Files in 1995. In 1996, she received the role of Catalina on the sci-fi/comedy Space Cases, in which she appeared in fifteen episodes. Originally, she auditioned for the part of Rosie Ianni, but the role went to fellow Canadian Paige Christina.

In 2002, Jewel became a series regular on the short-lived Fox Network television series Firefly playing engineer Kaylee Frye. Staite appeared in all fourteen episodes of the series and reprised the role of Kaylee for the 2005 feature film Serenity. In preparation for the role of Kaylee, Jewell had to gain twenty pounds in weight. After the series was cancelled, she lost the weight and kept it off even when they recast her for Serenity.

Following her work in Firefly and Serenity, Jewel added herself to the growing list of stars attached to the Stargate family of television programs. She played two different characters in the 2004 series Stargate Atlantis. In the episode titled "Instinct", she played a half-human/half-Wraith character named Ellia. Staite returned to the series in 2007 (sans makeup), this time as a series regular, playing the part of Doctor Jennifer Keller. Although credited as Keller in thirty-three episodes of the series, she actually only appeared in twenty-seven.

In 2010, Jewel reunited with Firefly co-star Sean Maher to play a husband and wife team in the "Mild Mannered" episode of season two of Warehouse 13.
