James Benjamin Blish was a science fiction atuhor born in East Orange, New Jersey on May 23rd, 1921. In addition to his various novels, Blish also wrote adaptations of first draft scripts to episodes from the original Star Trek television series. His stories were collected in anthology format in a series titled Star Trek 1-12. Blish completed eleven of the twelve novels, but died of lung cancer in the middle of writing book twelve. Blish passed away in Henlye-on-Thames, England on July 30th, 1975 at the age of 54.
