Carl Burgos was a comic book writer and graphic artist born Max Finkelstein in New York City, New York on April 18th, 1916. He is best known for his work at Timely Comics during the late 1930s and 1940s and is the creator of the original Human Torch - an android superhero who debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics #1 in 1939.
