Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an American feature film that blends elements of science fiction with superhero fantasy and action. It is based on the Captain America family of comic book titles published by Marvel Comics. It is the ninth film in the growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It is based on the "The Winter Soldier" storyline, which ran through issues 8-14 of Captain America, Volume 4 in 2005 and 2006. The original story, from the movie is largely based, was written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Steve Epting. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was produced by Marvel Entertainment and distributed through Marvel's parent company, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was released theatrically in the United States on April 4th, 2014. The film is the first sequel to 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and chronologically takes place after the events of 2013's Thor: The Dark World.

The movie stars Chris Evans, reprising his role of Steve Rogers, aka, Captain America as first seen in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and 2012's The Avengers. Other returning cast members include Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and lastly, Sebastian Stan as James Buchanan Barnes, aka, the Winter Soldier. New characters featured in this movie include Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter (Agent 13), Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce, Frank Grillo as Crossbones and Anthony Mackie as The Falcon.
