Canine describes mammals of the Canidae family of animals. This includes dogs, wolves, foxes, jackals and coyotes. It may also include some supernatural creatures like werewolves or even mutant and/or extraterrestrial animals such as saberwolves. Some canines have even developed enhanced intelligence and may even be able to communicate with more advanced life forms either through telepathy or through physical vocalization.
Werewolf breeds, such as that found in TV shows like Bitten or Being Human assume a canine form, which is to say, they physically resemble regular wolves while in animal form, though usually with enhanced and/or exaggerated physical characteristics including size.
On the Syfy series Defiance, there was an evolved race of predator known as a Saberwolf. Saberwolves are large four-legged mammals that also appear to have some characteristics common to insects. They have pointed legs and a tough carapace upon their back. They are pack hunters and will stalk and kill anything they deem as either a threat or potential food.
Then there's Dynomutt. Remember him? Dynomutt was actually not an animal at all, but a robot, whose form was patterned after that of a large breed domestic dog. Unlike traditional canines however, Dynomutt could speak English and also had telescoping robotic limbs.
