Candyman: Day of the Dead is an American independent horror film of the ghost fiction subgenre. It was written and directed by Turi Meyer with a script that was co-written by Al Septien. It was produced by Artisan Entertainment and released direct-to-video in the United States on July 9th, 1999. The film stars Tony Todd reprising the role of the franchise's antagonist, Daniel Robitaille - the meat-hooked bee fetishist with the smooth silky voice that lesser beings refer to as... Candyman.
The character of Daniel Robitaille, the Candyman, was created by author Clive Barker. He first appeared in the 1985 short story "The Forbidden", which was included as the first story in the fifth volume of the "Books of Blood" anthology series. The mythology of the character was expanded upon by writer & director Bernard Rose in the first Candyman.
Although Candyman: Day of the Dead was released direct-to-video in the United States, it did open to theatrical release in France on August 11th, 1999.
For more than twenty years, this film stood as the finale of the Candyman film series. A sequel film, simply called Candyman was produced and slated for a 2020 release, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
