Description[]

The Byers residence is the home of the Byers family located in the city of Hawkins, Indiana. It originally consisted of Lonnie Byers, Joyce Byers, and their children, Jonathan Byers, and Will Byers. Joyce and Lonnie got a divorce, and Lonnie moved elsewhere. As a single mom, Joyce struggled to keep the small one-story home in shape. The property that the house sat upon was actually rather large, and included a work shed located several yards away from the driveway. Elsewhere on the property was a fort that Will and Jonathan had made together that they called Fort Byers.

In November, 1983, Will Byers went missing. Everyone was distraught, but Joyce's depression turned into a fully-charged mania that bordered on lunacy. Even when others were beginning to settle in to the notion that Will was likely dead, Joyce never gave up hope. She got it in her head that Will was actually someplace ethereal - someplace she could not reach through conventional methods. Moreover, she came to believe that Will was trying to communicate with her through the Christmas lights. This belief turned into an obsession, and she decorated the entire house with Christmas Lights. She even drew the pattern of a Ouija board on the wall in her living room above the couch. When she began seeing images of strange shadowy beings inside the house, she smashed out the main window in the front. Lonnie Byers came to visit Joyce during this affair, and repaired the window.

As it turned out, Joyce was absolutely right about everything. Will had indeed been trapped inside of a nether-realm called the Upside Down. This world was home to bizarre, monstrous creatures referred to as Demogorgons, who had managed to break through into the real world to seek out human prey.

At one point, a fully grown Demogorgon had attacked the Byers household, and it took the combined efforts of Jonathan Byers, Nancy Wheeler, and Steve Harrington to drive it off.
