Buttons is the name given to a fictional animal featured in The Walking Dead multimedia franchise. She first appeared in issue #10 of The Walking Dead comic book series by Image Comics. She made thirteen appearances in the series in total, making her the longest living animal in the series. Buttons also made a single appearance on The Walking Dead television series on AMC. It appeared in the thirteenth episode of season five, "Forget".
Buttons was black mare from rural Georgia. She was owned by the Greene family and used as a work horse on the farm. Following an incident involving the release of several walkers from a barn, and multiple deaths, the farm was abandoned and Buttons was left behind. Glenn and Maggie Greene later returned to the farm and discovered Buttons. She was brought along with their group and came to live at the Alexandria Safe-Zone in Alexandria, Virginia. During her time there, a female survivor stole several horses from the zone, including Buttons. What became of Buttons following this incident is unknown.
On The Walking Dead television series, Aaron and Daryl Dixon discovered Buttons grazing in a pasture. They wanted to bring the animal back to Alexandria, and they slowly crept up to it with Daryl readying a lasso. Unfortunately, a herd of walkers appeared and mauled Buttons, bringing the animal down. After the walkers were disposed of, Arron put Buttons down as a mercy killing.
