A broken neck is caused when the bones of the neck suffer enough physical trauma that they actually break. Depending upon the severity of the break, an whether the injury severs the spinal column, a broken neck may result in either paralysis or death. These instances apply primarily to humans.
There are some races, both alien and terrestrial, that can survive a broken neck. Those gifted with accelerated healing, such as Deadpool, can recover from a broken neck and return to a normal life.
