History[]

The Boonta Eve Classic was a podrace that took place annually on the planet Tatooine. It was based out of the city of Mos Espa and began and terminated at the Mos Espa Grand Arena. The race consisted of three laps where competitors would navigate their way through dangerous canyons to the finish line. In 32 BBY, a young human named Anakin Skywalker came in first place, causing an upset amongst gamblers who had favored the Dug known as Sebulba to win. The announcer for the race was a two-headed Troig named Fodesinbeed Annodue.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Boonta Eve Podrace redirects to this page.
  • The concept behind the Boonta Eve Classic is based on the Boonta Speeder Race, which originates with the Star Wars: Droids animated series from 1985. It first appeared in episode 1x04, "A Race to the Finish".
  • Ben Quadinaros is the only racer who did not actually compete in the Boonta Eve Classic. His pod malfunctioned at the starting line before he could get started.
  • Ratts Tyerell is the only competitor in the 32 BBY podrace that lost his life. He died when his podracer crashed in the Laguna Cave.
  • The outcome of the 32 BBY Boonta Eve Classic actually has longstanding ramifications for the galaxy at large. Because of a wager placed by Qui-Gon Jinn with slave-owner Watto, Anakin Skywalker was awarded his freedom as a result of winning the race. Had he lost, there's a strong chance that he never would have left Tatooine, and thus, would never have become Darth Vader. So yeah... it's all Qui-Gon's fault.
  • In the Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace novelization, there is another podracer named Xelbree. This character does not appear in the film.
