Overview[]
Berman, Rautbort & Associates was a law firm headquartered in Portland, Oregon, specializing in business law. One of the senior partners of the firm was Harrison Berman, who was a supernatural creature known as a Wesen. Two of the lawyers who worked there were Adalind Schade, Serena Dunbrook and Camilla Gotlieb, who were Wesen as well, and were members of the breed known as Hexenbiester.
Berman, Rautbort & Associates represented a plaintiff that was pursuing a buy-out of the Primrose Paper Mill - a family owned operation run by another type of Wesen known as Mellifers. Due to Berman, Rautbort & Associates's Primrose owner Melissa Wincroft lost everything. As a result she decided to exact her revenge by taking out the lawyers involved in the case - specifically, Schade, Dunbrook, and Gotlieb.
Mellifers were a form of shape-shifting bee people, and could control entire hives of bees, ordering them to attack people on command. One of the Mellifer bees stung Serena Dunbrook on a Portland street car, injecting her with such a high volume of apitoxon that she instantly went into anaphylactic shock and died.
Portland Police Bureau detectives Nick Burkhardt and Hank Griffin investigated the murder of Serena Dunbrook and went to the Berman, Rautbort & Associates office to break the news to Harrison Berman and Camilla Gotlieb.
The Mellifers continued to target the lawyers from the firm. They succeeded in killing Camilla Gotlieb with powerful bee venom as she was doing yoga in a public park. Once Burkhardt and Griffin realized the connection, they put the third lawyer on the case, Adalind Schade, into protective custody. The Mellifers tracked Schade down and tried to kill her, but Burkhardt succeeded in killing Melissa Wincroft, saving Schade's life. [1]
