Characters and concepts from this series are based on the French fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, originally titled as La Belle et la Bête, which was written by novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740. It has since become popularized in various film and television adaptations, most notably, the 1991 animated feature film by Walt Disney Productions, and the 2017 live-action film, based on the animated film.
