Batwoman is an American live-action television series of the superhero fantasy genre. It is based on the character of Kate Kane as seen in comic book titles published by DC Comics. The series takes place in the greater DC Television Universe (Or Arrowverse) and is produced by Berlanti Productions, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Television. It aired on the CW Network beginning with an order of a twenty-three episode season span beginning on October 6th, 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was delayed and season one was cut to twenty episodes. Following the initial broadcast of the season one finale, lead actress Ruby Rose, who played the titular role of Kate Kane, departed from the show. Season two began in January, 2021 with a new actress and a new character. Javicia Leslie began playing the role of Ryan Wilder, making her the first female African American to lead a superhero series.
Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence. But don't call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope. When Kate Kane mysteriously disappears following an airplane crash, a homeless hard-luck case named Ryan Wilder discovers the batsuit and uses it to get revenge against the ones responsible for the death of her foster mother.
