The Battle of New York is a fictional land battle featured in the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was featured in the second half of the 2012 film The Avengers and was loosely based on characters and events chronicled in comic book titles published by Marvel Comics. The battle had lasting effects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the death and seeming resurrection of a valued S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, which was referenced in several spin-off media projects including 2013's Iron Man 3, the Marvel One-Shot: Item 47 mini-movie and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. The opposing combatants of the battle consisted of the Avengers (assisted by S.H.I.E.L.D.) against the alien menace of the Chitauri. The Battle of New York is notable in that it is the event that cemented the formation of the Avengers and showed the general populace of the world that extraterrestrial life exists and that there are heroes among them ready to battle against otherwordly threats.
Tony Stark was later shown to be suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome as a result of his participation in the battle; in particular, his decision to redirect a nuclear warhead through a wormhole towards the Chitauri fleet. [1]
