Batman Forever is an American feature film of the superhero fantasy genre. It is the third installment in the original Batman film series, and takes place after the events of 1992's Batman Returns. Beginning with this film, Joel Schumacher takes on the directing chops with a script written by Lee & Janet Scott Batchler and Akiva Goldsman, based on a story treatment by the Batchlers. It was produced by Warner Bros. in association with PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and premiered in the United States on June 16th, 1995. Not only does the franchise have a new director, but it also has a new Batman. Actor Val Kilmer dons the cape and cowl of everyone's favorite billionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. Batman's baddies come at him on a "double" front this time iwth Tommy Lee Jones as the scarred madman Two-Face, and wacky ole Jim Carrey as the cane-twirling goofball - the Riddler. With this third film, there are even more tights to fill as Chris O'Donnell knuckles up to play Bruce Wayne's angsty soon-to-be sidekick Dick Grayson, also known as Robin. Having left pesky reporters and psycho chicks in skintight vinyl suits in his rear-view, Bruce Wayne sets his sights on a new love interest, psychiatrist Doctor Chase Meridian, played by Nicole Kidman. Returning cast members to the series include Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth the butler, and Pat Hingle as Commissioner James Gordon.
