"The Enemy of My Enemy"[]
The body of a former member of the Gotham City Police Department named Ryan Lang is found in various states of dismemberment. Noticeably, his head is missing from the crime scene. All evidence seems to point at the Joker, but this particular gruesome tableau lacks the Joker's peculiar sense of style.
Batman investigates and runs afoul of a ghoulish Joker-esque monster with enhanced agility and durability. The Batman is unable to physically subdue him and the creature gets away carrying the head of Ryan Lang with him.
The Joker gets involved as well and decides to get his old foe's attention by sending him what appears to be the surgically removed appendix of Commissioner James Gordon. As Batman threatens to end the Joker once and for all, the Clown Prince of Crime suggests an uneasy alliance, as they both have reason to track down this monster. It has taken something that belongs to the Joker. Feeling it would be prudent to keep the Joker as close to him as possible, Batman reluctantly agrees to this unlikely team-up which the Joker refers to as the "Deadly Duo".
