Zam! Biff! Pow! Blammo! Holy theatrical release, Batman! The small screen wasn't big enough to hold this Dynamic Duo, so they spun out of their regular Batman night-time television series and exploded onto the big-screen. The film was directed by Leslie H. Martinson with a screenplay written by Lorenzo Semple. It was produced by William Dozier Productions and released theatrically on July 30th, 1966. The film starred Adam West and Burt Ward in their respective roles as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, and Dick Grayson, aka Robin. Supporting cast included Alan Napier as Alfred, Neil Hamilton as Commissioner Gordon, Stafford Repp as Chief O'Hara, and Madge Blake as Aunt Harriet Cooper. This film featured the entire cadre of Batman's most infamous foes including Cesar Romero as The Joker, Burgess Meredith as The Penguin, Frank Gorshin as The Riddler, and Lee Meriwether making adolescent boys cries "Meow" as Catwoman.

- Batman was created by comic book writer Bill Finger and graphic artist Bob Kane. He first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May, 1939. He received his first ongoing series, Batman, in the Spring, 1940 beginning with Batman #1.
- Batman is a thirty-minute prime time, live action television series broadcast by the ABC Network between 1966 and 1968. Premiering on January 12th, the series featured actor Adam West as the perennial character of Batman, while Burt Ward donned nylon stockings and fairy boots for his portrayal of the erstwhile sidekick, Robin. The series took the tradition of Batman into uncharted territory, oftentimes mocking the character's heritage with trite dialogue and overly campy plot devices.
- The tagline for this film is "He's here big as life in a real Bat-epic". Another, and slightly more disturbing tagline is "MEN DIE! WOMEN SIGH! Beneath that Batcape - he's all man!"

- Production on Batman: The Movie began on April 25th, 1966. Principal filming concluded on June 2nd, 1966. The movie was filmed in Los Angeles, California. Studios shots were filmed at Desilu Studios in Culver City. [1]
- This film was released in between season one of the regular series, which ended on May 5th, 1966 and season two, which began on September 7th, 1966.
- Batman made its television debut on ABC on July 4th, 1971 as part of the ABC Sunday Night Movie. It was rebroadcast on September 4th, 1971.
- Batman: The Movie was released on Blu-ray by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on July 1st, 2008. The Special Edition feature includes new packaging cover art. [2]
- On the movie review film site Rotten Tomatoes, Batman: The Movie has a 78% Fresh Tomatometer rating based on 32 posted reviews. It has a 62% audience score based on 138,904 user ratings. By contrast, the equally campy Batman & Robin from 1997 has an 11% Rotten rating based on 93 posted reviews and an audience score of 16%.
- Other than the members of the United World Headquarters Security Council, there are no people of color presented in this film.
- This is the only time that Lee Meriwether has portrayed the role of Catwoman. However, following this film, she did play a character named Lisa Carson in two episodes from season two. She appeared in "King Tut's Coup", and "Batman's Waterloo". Other actresses who have played the role of Catwoman in the series include Julie Newmar from seasons one and two, and Eartha Kitt from season three.
- The continuity of this film and the Batman television series has been retroactively attributed to a reality designation dubbed Earth-66 (reflective of the release year of both the series and the film. [3] By extension, all spin-off media including the Legends of the Superheroes television movie and the Batman '66 comic book series are part of this reality as well.
- This film was released one day before the U.S. release of War of the Gargantuas.
