Description[]

The Banning family were an upper class American family that resided in the city of Mapleton in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. In the year 1940, archeologist Steve Banning was trying to find work in Cairo and convinced Tim Sullivan, aka the Great Solvani, to invest in an expedition to locate the tomb of Egyptian princess Ananka. They journeyed to the Hill of the Seven Jackals in Karnak and unearthed the tomb of the mummy Kharis. For daring to defile this sacred place, a curse was placed upon the families of all those involved, including Steve Bannings. Steven and his ally Babe Jenson managed to defeat Kharis, but the mummy never truly died, and bided its time to mete out its vengeance. Returning to the United States, Steve Banning married The Great Solvani's daughter, Marta Sullivan. They lived at the Banning estate in Mapleton and had a son named John. John Banning grew up to be a physician. Steve's older sister, Jane Banning, resided at the estate as well. John was engaged to marry a woman named Isobel Evans.

In 1970, an Egyptian high priest named Mehemet Bey moved to Mapleton and brought Kharis along with him. He awakened him using the sacred Tana leaves and set him off to continue with his curse of vengeance. He succeeded in killing Steve Banning by strangling him to death in his home, the murdered sister Jane, who actually had nothing to do with the expedition. John Banning led a lynch mob to his father's estate and put it to the torch. Kharis fell into the flames, seemingly breaking the curse.

Shortly thereafter, John and Isobel were married. It appeared that the curse of Kharis was now behind them.
