The Banning estate is a fictional location featured in the Universal Monsters film series. It is associated with the Mummy line of films and appeared in The Mummy's Tomb in 1942.
Description[]
The Banning estate was a large plantation house located in the city of Mapleton in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It was the home of archaeologist Steve Banning and his wife, Marta Sullivan-Banning. Steve's older sister, Jane Banning resided at the estate as well, implying that it might have been in the family for generations. Steve and Marta's son, John, grew up in this house. The Bannings had a caretaker that lived on the estate name Jim.
One evening in 1970, Steve Banning was entertaining his sister, his son, and John's girlfriend, Isobel Evans, by regaling them with the story of Steve once fought against a living mummy named Kharis back in 1940. The story seemed wildly fantastic, that most didn't believe him - especially the practical-minded John Banning.
They soon learned the truth however, as an Egyptian high priest of Karnak named Mehemet Bey brought the mummy Kharis to Mapleton so that it could continue its curse against the families that tried to violate the tomb of the Princess Ananka. Awakening Kharis, he sent him off to the Banning estate, where he scaled the outside trellis to break into Steve Banning's room. He strangled Banning to death. The following evening, the caretaker Jim had a chance encounter with Kharis and fell into a comatose state from fright. Kharis also killed Steve's sister, Jane.
Ultimately, John Banning led a lynch mob that raided his father's house in the hopes of defeating Kharis. Cornering the mummy on a balcony, they launched numerous torches, which caused the building to catch ablaze. Kharis caught on fire, and was thus defeated. It is unknown if the fire caused any additional damage to the house.
Points of Interest[]

- The study of the Banning residence was located on the second floor. Steve kept a photograph cameo of his late wife Marta on an end-table. It was here in 1970 that Steve told Jane, John, and Isabelle about his adventures in Cairo in 1940.
