Back to the Future is an American feature film of the science fiction genre that also includes elements of the family film and comedy genres. It deals with the subject of time travel and the problems and paradoxical circumstances therein. Back to the Future is the first installment in a film series that yielded two sequels and a short-lived animated television program. The movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis with a script written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. It was produced by Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg and his production company, Amblin Entertainment. It was released theatrically in the United States on July 3rd, 1985. Back to the Future stars former Family Ties star Michael J. Fox as teenager Marty McFly, who finds a way to travel backwards in time from the 1980s to the 1950s courtesy of a DeLorean time machine and a crazy old scientist named Doc Emmett Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd. The movie also stars Lea Thompson as the female lead, Lorraine Baines, Crispin Glover as George McFly, Claudia Wells as Jennifer Parker, Marc McClure as Dave McFly, Wendie Jo Sperber as Linda McFly, and Thomas F. Wilson as the movie's antagonist, Biff Tannen.
