"Awake" is a film short and the second vignette featured in the 2016 anthology film Minutes Past Midnight. It was directed by Francisco Sonic Kim with a script written by Collin George. It was produced by Expressway Productions. The original short was released on October 4th, 2013.
Plot[]
Aaron is kinda, well... special.
Aaron is a young boy who suffers from some undisclosed form of brain damage. He has bandages covering a surgical scar on the left side of his head. He is in his bedroom playing with his toys and talking to himself. He is clearly upset and makes comments to himself about something being wrong with his brain. In the kitchen, his father Hatcher is frustrated with his son's condition, and stands around smoking cigarettes. As Aaron's ranting becomes louder, he goes out onto the front porch to get away from it. Aaron's head begins to bleed through the bandages.
The following morning, Hatcher awakens his wife Caylie, and they talk about Aaron. Caylie goes downstairs, but Aaron is not particularly responsive to her. He goes outside to play, and finds an injured dog lying in the weeds outside their property. The animal's stomach has been torn open and it is clearly suffering. Aaron stomps the poor animal to death.
Caylie finds Aaron wandering about and brings him back to the house. Aaron's vision is impaired and he begins to panic, screaming "Am I asleep?!?" Caylie goes to get help, but Aaron doesn't want her to leave. Hatcher is downstairs on the phone with the doctor. When Caylie returns, Aaron freaks out and punches her in the throat. He then begins snarling like an animal and lumbers downstairs.
Hatcher tries to restrain him, but Aaron bites him on the wrist like a feral animal. Hatcher then whacks him across the head with a skillet pan. Aaron runs outside. He goes to the remains of the dead dog and shoves a few of his toys inside of its stomach wound. He then lies down on top of the dog to sleep.
