"Check and Mate!" is the title to the story from the 108th issue of volume one of the American superhero comic book series The Avengers. The story was written by Steve Englehart. Interior pencil artwork was provided by Don Heck with Dave Cockrum and Joe Sinnott on inks. The cover art illustration was composed by Rich Buckler and Joe Sinnott. The story was colored by Petra Goldberg and lettered by John Costanza. It was edited by Roy Thomas. The issue shipped with a February, 1973 cover date and carried a cover price of 20 cents per copy (US). In this issue, the Grim Reaper and the Space Phantom team up to recruit the Vision into betraying the Avengers with the promise of a human body. The Vision pretends to go along with it, thus biding his time so that he free his comrades. All this plus HYDRA too!
